Background

2024 Volunteer to be a MatSE 492 Judge

MatSE 492 is a junior-level materials science class where students get to experience developing and pitching engineering solutions to an industry and alumni board. This opportunity will give you a glimpse into some of the amazing capabilities of our undergraduate students.

What is required of an alumni volunteer?

There are two opportunities that are available for alumni volunteers. Volunteers can choose to partake in one or both opportunities. One opportunity available is the Whitepaper Presentations that will occur virtually over Zoom. The other opportunity is the Final Presentations, which will occur in person.

Each volunteer will be provided with a rubric for scoring. Each volunteer should plan on 2-3 hours of reading and scoring papers prior to the presentations. On the day of the presentations, there will be 2-3 hours of presentations by students, which will provide volunteers with an opportunity to interact with students. Volunteers may ask students typical business questions about the ideas being presented. Volunteers then must score each overall presentation. Please see below for more information.

Whitepaper Presentations- Thursday, March 14th, 2024 starting at 4:00PM.

This opportunity will be held virtually via Zoom. Held in a poster presentation format, judges will be moved between the team’s breakout rooms. Presentations will begin at 4:00PM and will take approximately two hours to complete.

Final Presentations- Thursday, April 25th, 2024 starting at 4:00PM.

This portion will be held in person only. The final presentation consists of a final proposal and a 10-minute presentation to the alumni board.
